THE FIELD / DESIGN LANGUAGE
A quiet field that grows itself.
Galok is a personal magazine built like a field. Its design rules are not decoration: they are the way one person learns to see — and the way that seeing is shared with strangers on the other side of the internet.
one palette · two themes
01 / PHILOSOPHY
The field grows first. Design serves the growth.
Three laws, one inheritance. Every page, typeface and motion rule below descends from them.
The design should feel like something a plant would choose: unhurried, layered, alive at the edges. Restraint is not emptiness — it is room left for growth.
Color, type and motion exist to carry an argument, a city or a memory. If a visual cannot be read, it is decoration and decoration is removed.
One signal colour, three lens colours that stay inside their lenses, and greys for everything else. Motion stays within one breath. Discipline is what makes the field legible across years.
View
The wide stance. Stand back until the whole field is one image: a page, a city, a dataset.
39.9042°N / 116.4074°EFrame
The editor's cut. A frame is a claim: this matters, and that does not. Every chosen crop is an argument.
ISSUE 02 / CITY 05Observe
The long stay. Look until the subject looks back — until the pavement, the ledger or the light returns something only patience can see.
PLATE 04 / FIELD NOTE02 / PALETTE
One palette, two complete themes.
Every colour on a rebuilt page is a token with a value for light and a value for dark. Each text colour is measured against the ground it actually sits on, in both themes, before a page ships.
A Ground and ink
B The one signal
C The three lenses
Values and contrast ratios are read from the live stylesheet as you look, so this page cannot drift from the system. Tap a swatch to copy its value.
03 / TYPE & MARKS
One family, two voices beside it.
Galok Sans carries the interface, the headlines and the reading. A monospace keeps labels, numbers and coordinates in step. Galok Serif is the editorial voice, used in italics, a few words at a time.
The field grows first.

04 / GRID & RULES
White space is the first material.
A measured column, wide margins and hairlines that divide without shouting. Controls are pills; pictures and text blocks keep their square corners.
Content sits in a column at most 1240px wide; the side margins grow from 20px on a phone to 64px on a wide screen.
Dividers are one pixel in the rule colour. Structure is drawn with lines, not shadows.
Filters, buttons and the Ask capsule are pills. Pictures, plates and text blocks stay square.
On touch screens, controls on the foundation are at least 44px tall.
Before a page ships, every visible text is measured against its real background in light and dark, at four widths.

05 / MOTION
Less than a breath.
Things arrive and stop. Motion is opacity and transform on one curve; a spring is kept for the one object that should feel alive. Anyone who asks for stillness gets it.
cubic-bezier(.22, 1, .36, 1), the --g-ease token. Fast out, long settle, no bounce.
cubic-bezier(.3, 1.2, .5, 1), --g-spring: a slight overshoot, kept for the capsule.
Images fade in from a soft blur as they load; one that fails is hidden rather than shown broken.
prefers-reduced-motion turns every transition and animation off.
06 / ASSETS
The tools of the field.
Everything below is live on this site. The posters are made by the same rules that make every page: one event, one colour, wide paper.
- Foundation
- /assets/galok/foundation.css — tokens in both themes, the type family, masthead, footer and shared components.
- Section sheets
- Each page adds only what is its own, such as /radar/radar.css or /data/data-desk-v1.css.
- Brand mark
- /assets/galok-symbol.svg — the glyph that signs every page.
- Seal font
- /assets/fonts/galok-glyph-display.woff2 — seal script, subset to the marks the site renders.
- The gate
- scripts/test-unified-browser.mjs — measures every text on every rebuilt page, in both themes, before it ships.
