DONGJING MENG HUA LU / 卷二

朱雀門外街巷

Outside Zhuque Gate

Meng Yuanlao keeps moving south. The imperial avenue does not become one single-function corridor: nightlife, education, state medicine, examinations, temples, gardens, military institutions and animal traffic keep attaching themselves to the same axis.

01 / SOUTH AXIS

One red line. Too many functions to call it zoning.

The diagram follows textual sequence and adjacency from Zhuque Gate toward Nanshun Gate. It is not a surveyed reconstruction, and the spacing between nodes is editorial.

METHOD / RELATIVE TOPOLOGY

Only textual order and relationships are encoded here. The diagram deliberately avoids pretending that uncertain Northern Song block boundaries can be plotted with modern-map precision.

Outside Zhuque Gate, the avenue does not simply become “ordinary city.” It remains ceremonial and controlled while absorbing nightlife, residences, education, medicine, examinations, military institutions, religious compounds and everyday commerce.

1. The gate opens directly into nightlife and residence.

Beyond the eastern side of Zhuque Gate there were also houses. Going east were the main street, Maijie Alley and Zhuangyuan Tower; much of the rest consisted of courtesan establishments stretching toward Baokang Gate Street. Outside Zhuque Gate on the Imperial Avenue, the western side connected toward the Xinmen entertainment quarter and Shazhu Alley, where courtesan houses also stood. Farther south were the eastern and western Jiaofang establishments, while the remaining frontage held residents and tea shops. The market activity in the middle of the street was especially lively at night.

GALOK READING

Meng crosses a major gate and immediately records residents, tea shops, courtesan houses and a night-active street market. The ceremonial axis therefore continues through a district whose social life is neither quiet nor exclusively official.

2. After Longjin Bridge, control returns beside schools and public medicine.

South of Longjin Bridge, vermilion barriers were again set in the center of the road, as before the palace. To the east stood the residence of Liu the surveillance official; farther south were the Imperial Academy and the Directorate School. Beyond the academy a cross street reached its south gate. South of that street stood the Southern Bureau for Prepared Medicines and Public Relief. For roughly five li beyond, the district was residential.

GALOK READING

The crucial detail is the return of the vermilion barriers. Commercial and residential openness outside the palace does not erase controlled movement along the axis. Education and state medicine are embedded in the same corridor.

惠民
STATE MEDICINE / 熟藥惠民南局

A government medicine outlet has a street address.

The institution belongs to the Northern Song system for preparing and selling medicines. On this page it matters spatially: Meng locates a state medical node directly south of the Imperial Academy complex, not in an abstract administrative list.

3. Exams, storage, ritual and royal landscape occupy the same southern corridor.

Another cross street to the east reached the rear gate of the Five Sacred Peaks Abbey. About half a li along the main street stood the Reviewing-Street Pavilion, where the imperial carriage would stop on excursions so the ruler could watch mounted displays. To the east were the examination compound, a miscellaneous-goods storehouse, the Ministry of Rites, the examination transport office and fodder grounds. South of the street stood Baozhen Palace, extending toward Yunqi Bridge over the Cai River. Near Nanshun Gate, the Five Sacred Peaks Abbey on the west side of the Imperial Avenue was especially imposing. Eastward from its west gate ran bridges and a willow-shaded avenue for roughly five li, containing additional religious institutions, palace halls and gardens. The Jiucheng Palace housed the Nine Tripods. Nearby lay Yingxiang Pool, lined with willows, reeds and lotus, with ducks and geese on the water and bridges, pavilions, terraces and halls distributed along its banks. Only on Qingming each year were ordinary people admitted for incense offerings and a day of sightseeing.

GALOK READING

This section is why the avenue should not be reduced to one label. Examination administration, storage, religious compounds, imperial spectacle and landscaped leisure all attach to the same southward system. Yingxiang Pool adds a controlled form of public access: Meng specifies one annual day when the population could enter for worship and sightseeing.

4. The final approach mixes military institutions, religion, food and summer leisure.

WORKING TRANSLATION

On the west side south of Longjin Bridge stood the residence of Privy Councillor Deng. Farther south, inside Military Academy Alley, were the residence of Quzi Zhang and the Temple of King Wucheng. Beyond them were Zhang's fried-cake shop and the residence known as that of Empress Mingjie. A road west led to Daxiangkou, and farther west stood the Qingfeng Tower wine house, where city residents often went to cool themselves in summer. At Laoya Alley stood a weapons office extending toward the first bridge. South from Daxiangkou was Yanzhen Abbey, which received Daoist clergy arriving from different regions. Farther south were the Three Academies and lanes running toward Yinan Bridge; continuing south reached Nanshun Gate.

GALOK READING

A military academy, weapons office and religious reception point do not displace food and leisure. Zhang's fried cakes and Qingfeng Tower remain part of the same remembered geography. Institutional density and ordinary consumption keep sharing frontage.

TEXT NOTE / 明節皇后宅

One commonly circulated transcription gives 「明節皇太宅」. Other witnesses, including the Chinese Text Project text, give 「明節皇后宅」, matching the posthumous title “Empress Mingjie.” Galok uses 皇后宅 here and keeps the variant visible.

5. At Nanshun Gate, hierarchy becomes a traffic rule.

PRIMARY TEXT09E / NANSHUN GATE
其門尋常士庶殯葬車輿,皆不得經由此門而出,謂正與大內相對,唯民間所宰豬,須從此入京,每日至晚,每群萬數,止十數人驅逐,無有亂行者。
WORKING TRANSLATION

Ordinary funeral carriages and hearses were not permitted to leave the city through this gate, because it directly faced the imperial palace. Pigs slaughtered for the city's population, however, were required to enter through it. Meng says that by evening the herds could number in the tens of thousands, driven by only a dozen or so people, yet without disorder.

GALOK READING

The final detail is unusually concrete. The gate's symbolic relationship to the palace restricts funeral traffic, while the city's food supply gives slaughtered pigs a compulsory route inward. Ceremonial hierarchy and urban logistics occupy the same gate, but they receive opposite permissions.

END OF THE AXIS / 南薰門

Meng ends a long ceremonial corridor with two practical movement rules.

FUNERAL TRAFFIC / OUTBOUND
不得由此門出

Ordinary funeral vehicles were barred from leaving through the gate because it faced the imperial palace.

LIVESTOCK TRAFFIC / INBOUND
豬須從此入京

The city's pigs were required to enter here. The same gate that excluded one kind of traffic concentrated another.
