DONGJING MENG HUA LU / 卷三
Leave Xiangguo Temple and the market does not disappear. It branches: books and headwear at the gate, embroidery and southern food in side lanes, medicine and boots farther north, then guesthouses, wine, offices and three Sweetwater lanes toward the ancestral temple.
OPEN THE STREET REGISTER ↓Direction words come from Meng's sequence. Screen position is editorial. Distances, parcel boundaries and modern coordinates are deliberately not reconstructed.
The frontage immediately combines dress, books and tea.
Side lanes add courtesan houses, embroidery work and a strong concentration of southern-style food.
The register moves north toward Jingling Palace's east gate, then bends east through named streets, entertainment, medicine and boot shops.
A pharmacy becomes an art-historical interior: Meng says both walls carried landscapes painted by Li Cheng.
Religious / institutional reuse, a notable guesthouse, a principal wine house and carriage administration enter the same eastward sequence.
The audit office, Sweetwater lanes and ancestral temple carry the text toward Caomen Street — then Meng admits the catalog cannot enumerate everything.
The catalog ends by acknowledging that the city exceeds the catalog.
The sentence describes paintings on the shop walls. It does not say they were for sale, nor that the shop functioned as a gallery.
A commercial interior remembered through the presence of a famous painter's landscapes. The page treats placement as evidence and leaves commission, date and ownership open.
Entry 18 organized commerce by thresholds inside Xiangguo Temple. Entry 19 changes the grammar. The text now moves by direction words and proper names; specialization remains, but it is dispersed through an urban network rather than contained by one institution.
On the main street outside the temple's east gate were shops associated with headwear, belts, books and head ornaments, together with Ding Family's plain-tea shop. South of the temple was Lushi Lane with courtesan houses. Embroidery Lane was occupied by religious women engaged in embroidery work. To the north was Little Sweetwater Lane, where southern-style food shops were especially numerous; courtesan houses were also common. Farther north stood Li Qing's preserved-ginger shop.
What spills from the temple is not one commodity cluster. Dress, books, tea, textile work, food and entertainment sit in close textual succession. The useful claim is mixed urban specialization, not a modern zoning analogy.
Continuing north leads toward the east gate of Jingling Palace, then the sequence bends east through Shuiwu Street, Gaotou Street and the lane behind the ginger trade. Around Jiangtang Lane the text names a medicine shop and boot shops. At the mouth of Jiebe Lane stood the Song Family crude-drug shop; Meng says that both walls inside were painted with landscapes by Li Cheng.
Li Cheng matters here because of placement. The text locates his landscapes on a medicine shop's two walls. It does not establish an art sale, a gallery function, a commissioning history or a date.
East along the main street from Jingling Palace's east gate, the text passes the former Qianming Temple site and its later institutional reuse; the third Sweetwater Lane; Xixi Tower guesthouse, counted among the capital's notable establishments; Gaoyang principal wine house; the carriage office; the second Sweetwater Lane; the audit office; and onward to the front of the imperial ancestral temple. South lay the first Sweetwater Lane; north of the ancestral temple, Yulin Lane connected toward Caomen Street. Meng ends by saying the places could not all be enumerated.
The common electronic text and the Siku/WYG-family line diverge at several names. The working text follows the Siku/WYG forms where CText / Gutenberg agree, while keeping the common forms visible.
The street register now gives way to a citywide religious directory.
A SACRED NETWORK OVERLAYS THE CAPITAL.
