DONGJING MENG HUA LU / 卷四

皇太子納妃

One wedding, precisely remembered.

Meng gives this ritual only thirty-seven characters. Modern annotation identifies the most plausible event as Crown Prince Zhao Huan's marriage to Lady Zhu in 1116. The page keeps that identification marked as a historical inference while letting the surviving ritual details remain spare.

EVENT IDENTIFICATION1116政和六年

A rare ritual with one strong candidate.

Meng lived in the capital from 1103 until the Jingkang crisis. Yang Chunqiao's annotated edition notes that a crown prince marrying while formally holding that title appears only once in this span: Zhao Huan, made crown prince in 1115, married Lady Zhu in 1116.

The event identification comes from modern historical reconstruction. Meng's thirty-seven-character entry itself supplies ritual form, vehicle and procession detail; it does not name the couple or print the year.

01 / MEMORY HORIZON

Five dates change the weight of thirty-seven characters.

1115CROWN PRINCE

Zhao Huan is established as heir.

1116MARRIAGE

The likely event behind Meng's entry: the crown prince marries Lady Zhu.

1125ACCESSION

The imperial couple is taken north during the fall of Kaifeng.

1147REMEMBERED

Meng completes the book from the south, writing the lost capital back into sequence.

1. The surviving entry is almost pure procession.

WORKING TRANSLATION

For the crown prince's marriage, there were the procession register and guards, with banquet music and ceremonial escort. The consort rode in an 厭翟車, covered in purple, with curtains tied to four posts, great belts hanging from the structure, and four horses drawing the carriage.

GALOK READING

The record is dominated by visible form. It reads like a roadside memory of what passed through the city: procession, music, carriage, fabric, structure and horses.

02 / RITUAL OBJECT

厭翟車

The annotated edition connects Meng's vehicle to the ritual tradition preserved in the 《政和五禮新儀》, where the crown-prince marriage rite likewise calls for the consort to ride an 厭翟車.

2. The page keeps inference separate from witness.

TEXTSecure

The ritual vocabulary, carriage, purple covering, four posts, great belts and four horses are in Meng's entry.

HISTORICAL IDENTIFICATIONProbable

The 1116 Zhao Huan–Lady Zhu identification is supplied by modern annotation through dynastic chronology.

TERM NOTE鹵部 → 鹵簿

The annotated edition explains 鹵部 as the procession term 鹵簿.

03 / MEMORY CUT1116 survives here as fabric, horses and a passing vehicle.

Meng does not narrate the marriage as court history. He remembers what the city could see.
